Murphy Beds in Wilmington, NC

A Murphy bed folds up into a wall cabinet so one room can be a guest room, an office, a gym or a playroom. Wilmington Blinds & More helps you choose the bed, plan the cabinets and shelving around it, and install it.

One room, more than one job

A guest bed is used a handful of nights a year but takes up most of the floor the rest of the time. Folded into the wall, the same bed leaves the room open for whatever you need on the other days.

Murphy beds are popular in home offices, bonus rooms, condos and kids' rooms that also host visitors. Because the bed sits inside a cabinet, the wall can be finished with side units, bookshelves or lighting so it looks like built-in furniture when the bed is up.

Wilmington Blinds & More offers Murphy beds with premium mattresses in a wide range of colors and finishes, and has displays at its Hanover Center showroom.

Guest room and office combinations

The most common request is a room that works as an office on weekdays and a guest room when family visits. The showroom has a display of exactly that: a Murphy bed cabinet next to a corner desk, upper cabinets and a fold-out work surface.

Bed with side cabinets

Tall cabinets or open shelves on one or both sides of the bed give a guest somewhere to put things, and give you storage the rest of the year.

Bed with desk

A desk beside the bed, or a work surface that stays usable when the bed is closed, turns a spare room into a full-time office.

Library-style bed

Some designs disguise the bed behind shelving so the wall reads as a bookcase. Ask about library-style models.

Planning considerations

Bed size
Decide who will sleep on it and how often. That decides the mattress size and the width of the cabinet.
Clearance when open
Measure how far the bed will reach into the room when it is down, and leave space to walk around it and open nearby doors.
Ceiling height and wall space
Ceiling height, windows, vents and outlets all affect which model and orientation will fit.
Wall and floor conditions
Wall beds are secured to the wall. The wall and floor are checked during planning so the bed opens smoothly and sits level.
What else the wall needs to do
Think about storage, a desk, shelving or lighting now, so the bed and surrounding units are designed together.

  4. Built to your measurements

Murphy bed questions

What is the difference between a Murphy bed and a credenza bed?

A Murphy bed is a wall bed: it folds up into a tall cabinet secured to the wall. A credenza bed is a self-contained, low cabinet that opens out into a bed and does not mount to the wall. See credenza beds or read Murphy bed or credenza bed for a side-by-side comparison.

Can I see a Murphy bed before I buy one?

Yes. The Hanover Center showroom has Murphy bed displays, including one combined with a desk and cabinets. Visiting lets you try opening and closing the bed and compare finishes.

Does a Murphy bed come with a mattress?

Murphy beds from Wilmington Blinds & More are offered with premium mattresses. Ask during your consultation which mattress fits the model you choose and how thick it can be.

Can a Murphy bed go in a room with a low ceiling or a window?

Often, yes, but it depends on the model and orientation. Ceiling height, windows, outlets, vents and door swings are all checked when the room is measured, before a model is recommended.

Is a Murphy bed comfortable enough for regular use?

Many people use wall beds every night. Comfort depends mostly on the mattress, so bring up how often the bed will be used so the designer can recommend the right setup.
