Garage storage options

Most garages need a mix: closed storage for things you want out of sight, open wall storage for what you grab often, and somewhere for bulky seasonal items to live.

Garage cabinets

Base and tall cabinets for tools, chemicals, paint and supplies you would rather keep closed. Hanging wall cabinets keep storage off the floor.

Storage racks and shelving

Racks and adjustable shelving for bins, coolers and holiday decorations, sized to the items you actually store.

Wall organization

Wall systems with hooks, baskets and specialized organizers for bikes, yard tools, beach gear and sports equipment.

Planning your garage

Before your consultation, walk through the garage and sort what is there into a few groups:

  • Daily: things you use every day or week, such as bikes, dog leashes, recycling and tools.
  • Seasonal: holiday bins, beach chairs, coolers, camping gear.
  • Hazardous or messy: paint, fertilizer, pool supplies and cleaners that belong behind doors.
  • Large items: ladders, wheelbarrows and lawn equipment that need floor or wall space.

Then note how many cars need to fit, where doors and steps are, and whether you want a work surface. Those answers shape where cabinets go and how deep they can be.

Design and installation

How a garage project works

  1. Consultation

Start with a free consultation in your home, or visit the Hanover Center showroom first to see displays and finishes in person.

  2. Measure and plan

The space is measured and the designer talks through what you need to store and how you use the room.

  3. Design together

You work through the layout with the designer and choose colors, finishes and accessories that suit the room.

  4. Built to your measurements

The system is made to the specifications of your design rather than pulled from a one-size-fits-all kit.

  5. Professional installation

The installation team fits the system in your home. Ask about scheduling and preparation during your consultation.

Garage organization questions

What kinds of garage storage do you offer?

Garage cabinets, shelving, storage racks, hanging wall cabinets and wall systems with hooks and organizers for tools and equipment. The consultation covers which combination fits your garage.

Will I still be able to park in the garage?

That is one of the first questions the designer will ask. Wall-mounted storage and shallow cabinets keep the floor clear, and the plan accounts for car doors opening and walking room around vehicles.

Do garage systems hold up in a hot, humid garage?

Garages in coastal North Carolina get hot and humid in summer. Ask during your consultation which cabinet materials and finishes are recommended for your garage conditions.

Can you include a workbench?

Yes, ask about a work surface as part of the cabinet layout. Note what you use it for, such as tools, crafts or potting, so lighting, outlets and storage can be placed around it.
